Program Notes – “The Magic of Christmas”

Few things match the joy and warmth of being among loved ones at Christmastime. Through this expressive setting of three seasonal mainstays, “The Magic of Christmas” offers us a musical “story without words.” The beautifully reflective “Christmas Eve by the Fire” (Jingle Bells) paints a picture of family and friends gathered around a crackling fireplace on the cold, snowy evening before. As pleasant moments pass, the charm and wonder of “The Savior’s Tale” (God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen) captures the imagination. “Christmas Day!” (The Wassail Song) is now upon us as we celebrate and eagerly anticipate the blessings of the coming new year.

While the musical content is largely in the lyrical style, particular emphasis on style and dynamics is the key to an effective performance. The percussion parts, while quite optional, will lend a very special “yuletide” quality to the music.
