Description
Written to highlight the resilience and perseverance of young musicians, “Unyielding” is an anthem for all those who never give up and push through. Wonderful melodic lines, an optional solo, and a mid-tempo give this piece a perfect spot on any concert stage.
Program Notes
This piece was commissioned by the Brandywine School District for their annual Stringfest.
When I was approached about this work, it was a somewhat daunting task. The commissioning body wanted a work for younger musicians that showed off the warmth and depth of the String ensemble. They also wanted the piece to speak to the unyielding spirit that we often see in young musicians. I think if you’ve been around long enough, you have noticed that young folks involved in Orchestra, Choir, Band, and the arts are just driven! Their passion and willingness to get better makes those around them want to be better too.
That spirit, I hope, is on full display in this work. It is heartfelt because it is true! As a former teacher, I am still inspired by the passion of my former students, whether they are still involved in music or not.
I hope you enjoy this work as much as I did writing it.
