Program Notes
“Aerialist March” was written in the circus march tradition. I have long been a fan of the “screamer” circus marches of march composers such as Henry Fillmore, Karl L. King, Julius Fučík, etc. It is my desire that this march fits well into this fast and fun march category.
An aerialist in the circus is an acrobat who specializes in performing mid-air stunts and feats of strength and grace while being suspended in the air. They use equipment such as aerial silks, trapezes, or hoops. It is one of the most exciting acts in the circus.
As a child living in Florida, my parents took me to the circus every single year. The Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus started their tour each year in the Tampa area. I have fond memories of attending and loved the fast pace of the music performed by the circus bands. This experience, plus my editing and arranging of literally hundreds of marches in my career, infused this style into the fabric of my musical sensibilities.
It has been my pleasure to have the opportunity to write this piece. I hope you and your students enjoy it and find it useful for your program.
