Program Notes
Losing loved ones is never easy. Many emotions permeate the months and years afterward. Music is a way to try to heal those wounds and reflect on the positive energy that our loved ones embodied. Forever Falcons was commissioned by the Fabius-Pompey Bands in honor of Gavin and Gia Myers, who died in a tragic car accident just months away from high school graduation.
In creating music that honors those we lost, there is a heartfelt responsibility to leave a lasting legacy. The students were full of life and were part of the music program at the school. Embedded in this emotional music is a sense of hope and love. The opening three-note melodic idea acts as a thread throughout this composition. The deliberate dissonance should be leaned into to create the tension-and-release effect. This is passed around the different colors of the Concert Band throughout.
A reflective solo section illustrates the simplicity and human nature of this tragedy. The buildup to the silence is palpable and poignant. An echo recap of the beginning brings the music to a solemn ending.
