Description

A beautiful ballad is born with “Highland Air.” Scottish snaps, folksong-like melodic lines, and lush harmonies dot the page in this lyrical offering from composer Christina Huss.

Program Notes

“Highland Air”is a stirring, lyrical piece for band that serves as both a modern reflection on and homage to the beauty of the Scottish Highlands. It seamlessly weaves original melodies and countermelodies with the iconic “Skye Boat Song,” collected by Anne Campbell MacLeod in the 1870s. This beloved tune, based on the Gaelic song Cuachag nan Craobh(“Cuckoo of the Tree”) by William Ross in 1782, is also known today as the main theme of the British-American series “Outlander.” Alongside this iconic tune, “Highland Air” also features “Niel Gow’s Lament for the Death of his Second Wife,” a lesser-known but deeply moving Scottish piece written in 1805.
