Description

Though it uses only the first six notes students learn, “Credence” was written to bring out the best in your ensemble, making them sound full and mature. This work is a testament to the fact that even the youngest ensemble can make a bold declaration of strength.

Program Notes

Credence means belief, trust, or confidence in the truth. This would be akin to the Declaration of Independence, with the phrase, “We hold these truths to be self-evident.” This piece, “”Credence,”” should be a bold statement just like this famous quote from one of the most important documents in the history of the world.

The piece uses only the first six notes the students learn, but it is my intention that this bold work will make them sound much more mature and confident with its strong rhythms, tight harmonies, and angular melodic figures. This is contrasted with a more legato B section to give the young students the opportunity to play in a more lyrical fashion. It is not necessarily intended to be a patriotic piece, but a strong declaration of strength by the youngest of musicians.

It is important that the tempo for the piece is adjusted to the students’ needs. The piece will work well slower or faster than indicated. You should feel comfortable making your own decision as to what tempo works best for your students.
It has been my pleasure to have the opportunity to write this piece. I hope you and your students enjoy it and find it useful for your program.
