      Binary 0101 - Laura Estes

Description

True to form, this cleverly titled work for the earliest musicians is a great piece to reinforce the first few notes learned on their instruments. Laura has a talent for writing music that is engaging and fun for young players, and “Binary 0101” is no exception!

Program Notes

There is an actual counting system that uses only two digits as its base, or base-2. Utilized by computers and other electronic devices to store data and perform computations, this binary number system is composed of only two numbers—zero and one. With roots going as far back as 2400 BCE in Egypt and the third century BCE in China, the binary digit system was invented by mathematician Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz in the 17th century. This led to the invention of electric circuitry and eventually, the first computer, ENIAC (Electronic Numerical Integrator and Computer). “0101” in binary code represents the number 5, and since this piece is a level 0.5, the title “Binary 0101” was born!
