Program Notes
“On the Wings of Hope” is a deeply personal work for me that was written for a dear friend, Wendy Bamonte. Her musical leadership with the Lake Grove Presbyterian Church Choir in Lake Oswego, Oregon, is inspiring for both their congregation and beyond. As she battled some health issues, her sense of hope and resilience inspired many.
This music is full of life and energy that one must embody to overcome life’s most imposing challenges. Set initially in 6/8 time, the music has a lift and agility that dances on air. The sweeping and soaring melody is full of hope and positivity. This melody works beautifully as counterpoint to itself throughout. A dance-like section at M.61 brings new life to this melody and frames the journey ahead.
We move to 4/4 time at M.61 to elongate this melody and transform it into a beacon of hope. With imitation throughout the ensemble, this melody gains momentum until a full presentation at M.131. A brief recap of the 6/8 meter music returns to bring the composition to a rousing and triumphant conclusion.
