Description

In “Electric Jellyfish,” Bluesy licks, impactful melodies, and a killer groove come together as a musical depiction of one of nature’s most beautifully bizarre, bioluminescent creatures.

Program Notes

“Electric Jellyfish” was commissioned by the South Central District Bandmasters of NC for the 9/10 Grade All-District Band. It premiered January 2025 in Cramerton, NC, under the direction of the composer, Carol Brittin Chambers. Sometimes you just never know where inspiration will begin! This particular piece got its start after a terrific night out with friends listening to an incredible jazz combo. I was completely inspired by the talent that these fine musicians displayed, in particular the Bass player and Piano player. At some point in the evening, we got on the topic of unique, unusual animals, including those of the sea that are somewhat peculiar or mysterious. “Electric Jellyfish” became the focus of conversation, and naturally my friends suggested that I compose a piece by the same name! I accepted the request and set out writing with these fascinating creatures in mind. Electric jellyfish aren’t really electric at all, but rather, they produce their own “glowy light” through a chemical process called bioluminescence. When I close my eyes, I can envision their dazzling colors and their constant motion of bobbing up and down. I was inspired to represent their “electricity” in this piece by including unique electric instruments such as the Electric Bass and Rock Organ. Remember the two jazz players I mentioned? Overall, I set out to create a fun, quirky composition that keeps gaining in energy to the end and that incorporates a unique mix of programmatic ideas, tone colors, and jazzy influence throughout. I hope you enjoy “Electric Jellyfish”!
