Yeehaw! Head out on the trail and face the perils and triumphs of life in the old west. This adventure-packed piece has a cinematic quality, reminiscent of the music from many beloved western adventure films.

Program Notes

If I asked you to imagine the quintessential scene from a Western movie, you would probably envision a dusty town at high noon, a cowboy standing tall, saloon doors swinging open. You can almost hear the wind whistling through the canyon, the whinny of horses, and the crack of a whip. Those iconic “spaghetti western” scenes and sounds have become a symbol of adventure, courage, and the wide-open frontier. Grab your hat, dust off your boots, and get ready to ride, as “Saddle Up, Buckaroos!” gallops to life with the excitement and swagger of a classic Western adventure. Inspired by the bold sounds and wide-open spirit of old cowboy films, known as “spaghetti westerns” (Western movies filmed in Italy and featuring Italian actors), this piece paints a musical picture of daring heroes, dusty trails, and sunsets blazing across the desert sky.

Originally titled “Spaghetti Western”, this piece captures that bold, cinematic spirit—gritty yet playful, dramatic yet full of heart. Written in homage to the great Western film scores of the 1950s and ’60s, it invites performers and listeners alike to step into their own tale of showdowns, sunsets, and triumph.

I decided that it was befitting to rename this piece “Saddle Up, Buckaroos!” in memory of Larry Robbins—affectionately known as “Ranger Buck” during his days at Ghost Town in the Sky. This work celebrates a man whose warm heart and powerful singing voice brought joy to everyone around him. Larry embodied the true spirit of the Old West: kind, steadfast, and always ready with a song and a smile. I had the privilege of knowing Larry as a devoted member of the Bethany Baptist Church Choir, and want this piece to always serve as a way to honor his gallant and beloved presence.

The word “buckaroo” in the title comes from the Americanized pronunciation of the Spanish word vaquero, meaning cowboy—a fitting tribute to the blending of cultures that shaped both the Western legend and its music. With galloping rhythms, sweeping Brass, and playful energy, “Saddle Up, Buckaroos!” is a celebration of friendship, adventure, and the enduring joy of the open trail.

So, saddle up, buckaroos, and experience the spirit of the West, and of “Ranger Buck,” with every note.
