Description
Golden is the perfect term to describe this work, as composer Yukiko Nishimura’s harmonic palette practically shimmers. Wonderful brass scoring and idiomatic woodwind lines stitch together a bold new work for the concert band repertoire.
Program Notes
This piece was a commissioning piece to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Santa Monica College’s Emeritus program. When I first heard the piece’s title the college gave me, I felt that the music should be somewhat heavy and strict overall, which is quite far from my favorite image. But while I was drafting the piece, the idea came to me that the music should focus on their bright future, so the color of the music should be bright, broad, mature, and gentle. This was the concept of the music. I included three sections in this piece. The first section is “Rising,” which tells about the school’s history determinedly; the second is “Brilliance,” which is about growing ahead of the future using vivid color, rhythmic passages, and lots of percussion sounds. The finale is “Chorale,” which expresses everyone’s hope. The thick harmony sounds like a pipe organ till the end.
