Program Notes
“Magical Gardens” is a spirited composition that explores the pentatonic scale for the developing String ensemble. Although the tempo remains constant, the music journeys through different styles. From jaunty rhythms to lyrical passages, there are many teaching opportunities present for your students.
The pentatonic scale has such a distinct and haunting sound to it, which is what led me to begin this composition in such a bold way. The combination of the melody playing arco and the accompaniment playing pizzicato creates a rich sound to start the music. This gives way to some lyrical lines in M. 26, which require a much different technique to achieve a smooth and connected sound. The melody becomes augmented and broader in nature, soaring over the lower strings.
The low strings turn the tables at M. 42 and take over melodic duties. This leads to a full-sounding moment at M. 50 where everyone should be prominent. A brief pull back at M. 66 allows for a climactic moment at M. 72.
The opening material returns at M. 88, but this time, everyone is arco. Keep that same intensity of a pizzicato attack, even though it is arco. A final full statement of the melody at M. 104 completes the musical journey.
