Program Notes

Written by Pascual Marquina during a train ride to Madrid in the early 1920s and inspired by a promise made to a friend, “España Cañi” is one of the most famous melodies of all time. At its core, it features a dramatic Spanish ballroom dance called the paso doble, which translates to “double step.”

This fast-tempo dance has been used worldwide, from competitions to television and film, and is instantly recognizable. As a music educator, I am a big proponent of young musicians having the opportunity to play as much music as possible. Sometimes, I worry that many people will go through music programs—and subsequently leave—before they have the chance to experience music that is sometimes kept locked away at higher technical levels. It is my hope that more people will have the opportunity to experience this piece with a new option for younger musicians.
