Program Notes
“Red alert! I repeat, red alert! This is not a drill—asteroid inbound, impact imminent!” the astronomer frantically calls over the lab loudspeaker. “Call the president—tell him that if this asteroid hits Earth, it will be catastrophic.” I sit transfixed in the living room, with my eyes glued to the glow of the TV screen. Will the scientists be smart enough to save the world, or will the perils of space prevail? Watching sci-fi movies was one of my favorite pastimes during my childhood. The intoxicating combination of exciting plotlines, futuristic elements, and heroic antics was the ultimate thrill for me. Undoubtedly, the old sci-fi movies would not be nearly as thrilling without their sweeping cinematic soundscapes. In writing Asteroid Inbound!, I wanted to capture the thrill and sounds of the beloved sci-fi movies of my childhood. I invite you to join me on a musical adventure to save the Earth from the perils of the inbound asteroid!
