Program Notes
“In Dulci Jubilo,” or in Latin in sweet rejoicing, is a traditional Christmas carol that dates back to the Middle Ages, as early as 1305 or even earlier. It has been used by many composers over the centuries, including Michael Praetorius, Johann Sebastian Bach, and Gustav Holst, to name but a few. It is a lovely tune with a nice flowing lilt in ¾ time.
As an arranger, I have been influenced by many of the famous versions of this carol but have tried to add my own stamp to this beautiful tune. This setting begins with some of my original material to serve as introductory and transitional material throughout the arrangement. My intention was to introduce differing harmonies to this setting, explore the use of counterpoint, and explore all the colors of the String Orchestra through orchestration and pizzicato techniques. Most importantly, this music should bring about a joyous celebration of the holiday season.
It has been my pleasure to have the opportunity to write this piece. I hope you and your students enjoy it and find it useful for your program.
