Program Notes
“Soaring Above” is intended to be an uplifting composition for developing young musicians. It should exude images of pure joy and help these budding musicians soar to a new level of musicianship. My goal is always to write tuneful music that students will want to play over and over again, and that will also be enjoyable to audiences.
The work begins with a tight harmony fanfare gesture to spring the piece into action. This material acts as the musical glue connecting the varied sections of the piece. Light, infectious rhythmic ostinatos propel the piece into the joyful main theme. This is followed by a more lyrical second theme, while continuing the light rhythmic ostinatos. The fanfare material then leads the piece to a stirring conclusion.
It has been my pleasure to have the opportunity to write this piece. I hope you and your students enjoy it and find it useful for your program.
