Description
Inspired by legends of King Arthur. Tyler Arcari paints a picture through this traditional style March of the City of Camelot. Portraying the gallantry and poise of the knights of the round table, this piece uses a unique minor strain to portay the stuggles inherent to any system of government upon navigating its infancy.
Program Notes
“City of Kings” was commissioned by Avalon Middle School for their 25th anniversary, Mike Philley – Conductor.
This was a cool commission for me, almost a “full-circle” moment. My high school band director, Mike Philley, reached out to me to compose a work for the 25th anniversary of the school I interned at (which he now teaches at), and it was premiered by the director I interned for, David Riggs (the former director of Avalon Middle).
I remember the lore of Avalon Middle School probably more vividly than my internship, as it was steeped in this idea of that mythical place where King Arthur ended up for his final rest, and the birthplace of the magical sword Excalibur.
I wanted to write a march that spoke of all the gallantry and poise of the Knights of the Round Table and what the City of Camelot represented, while also having a minor strain to portray the struggles inherent in any system of government as it navigates through its infancy.
I hope that you enjoy this traditional-style march, with a unique minor strain, as much as I did writing it!
